What PHAME Students Value Most

A Simple Interview Answer That Says Everything About PHAME

As part of Lea’s recent interview series with PHAME students, we captured a moment that beautifully reflects what so many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) experience when they come to PHAME.

In a short conversation with Lea, student Abbi was asked:

“What is your favorite part of PHAME?”

Her answer was thoughtful and meaningful:

“Meeting new people and taking different types of classes.”

While Abbi’s response is personal, it echoes what we hear from students across PHAME every day. It captures two pillars of our mission: building community and providing diverse creative learning opportunities.

Why These Words Matter

For adults with I/DD, opportunities for connection, friendship, and continued education often decrease dramatically after high school. PHAME exists to change that.

At PHAME, students can:

  • Meet new people and form lasting friendships

  • Explore a wide range of art forms

  • Discover new skills at their own pace

  • Build confidence through creative expression

  • Participate in a vibrant community that celebrates their individuality

When Abbi talks about “meeting new people,” she’s describing a core part of PHAME’s impact: a welcoming community where students belong.

When she shares that she loves “different types of classes,” she highlights PHAME’s ongoing commitment to offering diverse artistic and educational experiences that are accessible, inclusive, and joyful.
